Guitar Fretboard Notes

Every note on the neck. Click a note to highlight it everywhere.

On a guitar in standard tuning the open strings are E – A – D – G – B – E. Every fret raises the pitch by one half step, so the same 12 notes repeat from the 12th fret on.

How to learn the notes on the neck

  1. Memorise the notes on the two lowest strings first: the 6th and 5th strings are where most chord roots live.
  2. Learn the octave shapes: the same note appears two strings and two frets higher.
  3. Practise by naming a note out loud and finding it on every string.

FAQ

What are the notes on a guitar fretboard?

The chart on this page shows the note at every fret from 0 to 12 on all six strings in standard tuning.

How are the open strings tuned?

From the thickest to the thinnest string: E – A – D – G – B – E.

Why do the notes repeat after the 12th fret?

The 12th fret is exactly one octave above the open string, so the pattern of 12 notes starts again.
