Easy Guitar Chords for Beginners
The easiest guitar chords for beginners are Em, Am, E, A, D, C, G, Dm, A7 and E7. They use open strings and one to three fingers, and together they cover thousands of songs.
Start with two-finger chords
Em and A7 each use only two fingers, which makes them the perfect first chords. Em (022000) is a good starter because every string except one is allowed to ring.
The ten chords
- Em: 022000
- Am: x02210
- E: 022100
- A: x02220
- D: xx0232
- C: x32010
- G: 320003
- Dm: xx0231
- A7: x02020
- E7: 020100
Which songs can I play?
With G, C, D and Em you can play I-V-vi-IV progressions in the key of G, which cover many pop songs. With A, D and E you have the three chords of a classic blues or rock and roll tune.
How to practise
- Play each chord for a minute, picking the strings one by one to find any buzzing or muted notes.
- Practise switching between two chords as fast as you can without making mistakes, for one minute, then switch pairs.
- Add a simple down-strum pattern and count out loud: 1 2 3 4.
Common beginner problems
Sore fingers are normal and fade within a couple of weeks. Buzzing usually means your finger is too far from the fret wire. Muted strings mean the neighbouring finger is touching a string it should not.
