Waltz Strum (3/4) Pattern

The Waltz Strum (3/4) pattern is played D – D U D U (D = down, U = up, – = skip), counted 1 & 2 & 3 &. A pattern for three beats per bar: a strong down on one, then lighter down-ups.

The pattern

D = down strum · U = up strum · – = skip (keep your hand moving) · x = muted strum

How to practise it

  1. Mute the strings with your fretting hand and strum the pattern slowly until your picking hand does it without thinking.
  2. Keep your hand moving down on the beat and up on the "and", even when you skip a strum.
  3. Add one easy chord, then change chords every bar.
  4. Use a metronome and increase the speed in small steps.

Tempo

Start at 60 BPM and raise the tempo slowly up to 110 BPM once the pattern feels automatic. Practise with the online metronome
